Birmingham City Council
Inclusive in an exceptional way
Birmingham Pride is one of the biggest lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender events in the country – offering a unique platform for a fully inclusive employer like Birmingham County Council. Although a celebration of LGBT culture, the event attracts large numbers from across the community. Our task was to celebrate the Council’s commitment to equality in a way that would challenge stereotypes and delight everyone.
The solution
The council’s existing recruitment brand - 'be one in a million' - gave us a strong platform from which to launch a variety of bold, fun ideas under the headline “Don’t change for work.” Our exhibition stand at the event was like no other – and certainly not what you would expect from a local authority. The “Now that you’ve come out, come in…” closet brought real humour, not to mention photographic opportunities. Entering a wardrobe through its open back, participants burst through doors and glittery drapes to have their photo taken literally coming out of the closet.
The result
Birmingham Pride was a huge success and so was the Council’s stand. With over 1,500 visitors over the two days it was by far the most popular in the marketplace. Our client was delighted, and reading his testimonial is evidence of this. Our wardrobe concept was warmly received by everyone who 'came out' on the day; as were our pink USB wristbands, eye masks and rock sweets.
““I just want to say a big thank you for the absolutely brilliant work done for us for Birmingham Pride. The whole Pride campaign 'Don't change for work' has been a resounding success for us. Thank you for your energy and creativity on this one, you've been brilliant. Again, genius work on your part.”
Glen Knott, Principal Recruitment Officer, Birmingham City Council
““While we love our work, it’s not too often we can really say that we’ve had fun delivering a campaign from start to finish. But we can in this case – loud and proud!”
Lucy Connolly, Strategic Client Partner, Penna Barkers
