Cutting the cost of public notices

Aware of our contract with The Highways Agency, Oxfordshire County Council called on our expertise in the placement of public and statutory notices. In particular, the council’s Strategy and Performance team was keen to improve the costs in this area.

The solution

We recommended redesigning the standard template layout that the Council used. This involved replacing the logo with a single headline band, deleting the date of insertion from the notice copy and changing line spaces. These simple layout changes would not affect the overall content and would still deliver a clear message to meet legal requirements.

The results

In September 2009, our recommendations were accepted by the Council and the changes were implemented on all its public notice templates. With an average size reduction of around 30 mm in the depth of each ad placed, this change has the potential to reduce overall public notice advertising spend by 27%.

““Simple changes can really reduce costs. It’s just a matter of knowing where to look and having the design knowledge to make the difference. Thankfully, that’s exactly what we can offer.”
